Building Permit Information
There are some projects that require a permit and some projects that don't.
- Build a New House
- Room Addition
- Build a Garage
- Build a Carport
- Install/Build a Shed (over 200 sq ft)
- Repair/Replace Roof (any portion)
- Install a Swimming Pool
- Install a Fireplace
- Enclosed/Covered Porch or Patio
- Build a Porch or Patio more than 30" off the ground
- Build a Greenhouse
- Remodel basement
- Install Solar Panels
- Add/Replace More Than One Window
These are just a few things that you will need a permit for. Call Building & Codes if you have any permit questions.
If you are the owner and live at the property, you can do the work yourself. You will still need a permit and inspections will need to be called for.
Residential New Construction – Construction of a One to Two Family Home.
Commercial New Construction – Construction of any new Commercial structure.
Residential Remodel – Changes made to a residential structure to include additions and detached structures.
Commercial Remodel - Changes made to any Commercial structure to include additions and detached structures.
Fence – Construction of a new fence, extension of an existing fence, replacement of any portion of an existing fence.
Sign – Placing a new sign, replacing an existing sign, moving a sign, repairing any damaged sign.
Demolition – Demolition of any structure.
Building permits taken out after a project has been started are charged a penalty fee that is double the permit fee, up to a maximum of $500.00.
Taking a few minutes of your time to check zoning, code and permit requirements can save you a lot of headaches and money.
Building permit fees are based on the dollar valuation of your project using the Building Safety Journal. The fee schedule will let you know what your permit will cost.
