Required Inspections
Construction or work for which a building permit is required shall be subject to an inspection by the Code Enforcement staff and such construction or work shall remain visible and able to be accessed for inspection purposes until approved. Neither the Inspector, nor the jurisdiction shall be liable for any expense entailed in the removal or replacement of any material required to allow such inspection.
In some cases before or after issuing a building permit, Code Enforcement staff is authorized to examine or cause to be examined buildings, structures, and sites for which an application has been filed.
Accepting Reports
Code Enforcement may or may not accept reports of approved inspection agencies, provided that such agencies satisfy the requirements as to qualifications and reliability of the adopted code.
Inspections Required in Succession
It is the responsibility of the building permit holder or another authorized individual to notify our staff when construction work is readily available for inspection and to provide access and means to such areas of inspections required.
Work is not authorized to be moved forward until each successive inspection beforehand is approved by the Code Enforcement staff.
- Pre: Pre-inspections may or may not be required depending on the scope of work. Please ask in reference to, before hand to know for sure whether it is needed or not.
- Electrical and or Gas Service: Evergy and Kansas Gas utility companies require our Code Enforcement staff to conduct inspection for turn on, prior to obtaining service from these providers in relation to being disconnected for a length of time or other factors that apply.
- Footing: Footing inspections shall be made after excavations for footings are complete and any required reinforcing steel is in place.
- Foundation Wall: Foundation inspections shall be made after reinforcing steel is in place. For concrete foundations, any required forms shall be in place prior to inspection.
- Plumbing Rough Underground: Plumbing rough underground inspections shall be made after in-slab or under-floor building service equipment, accessories, and other items in reference to, are in place, but before being covered.
- Concrete Slab and or Under-Floor: Concrete slab and under-floor inspections shall be made after in-slab or under-floor reinforcing steel and building service equipment, conduit, piping accessories and other ancillary equipment items are in place, but before any concrete is placed or floor sheathing installed, including the sub floor.
- Water and or Sewer Line Taps: Water and or Sewer line tap inspections shall be made after necessary equipment is located within the trench, tap has been made, but before being covered.
- Electrical Rough-In: Electrical rough inspections shall be made after building service equipment, accessories, and other items in reference to, are in place, but before being covered.
- Plumbing Rough-In: Plumbing rough inspections shall be made after building service equipment, accessories, and other items in reference to, are in place, but before being covered.
- Mechanical Rough-In: Mechanical rough inspections shall be made after building service equipment, accessories, and other items in reference to, are in place, but before being covered.
- Gas Rough-In: Gas rough inspections shall be made after building service equipment, accessories, and other items in reference to, are in place, but before being covered.
- Framing: Framing inspections shall be made after the roof deck or sheathing, all framing, fire blocking and bracing are in place and pipes, chimneys and vents to be concealed are complete and the rough-in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and gas are approved.
- Electrical Final: Electrical final inspections shall be made after building service equipment, accessories, and other items in reference to, are covered and ready to be available for use to any consumer or occupant of the structure.
- Plumbing Final: Plumbing final inspections shall be made after building service equipment, accessories, and other items in reference to, are covered and ready to be available for use to any consumer or occupant of the structure.
- Mechanical Final: Mechanical final inspections shall be made after building service equipment, accessories, and other items in reference to, are covered and ready to be available for use to any consumer or occupant of the structure.
- Gas Final: Gas final inspections shall be made after building service equipment, accessories, and other items in reference to, are covered and ready to be available for use to any consumer or occupant of the structure.
- Final: The final inspection shall be made after all work is "turn key finished" and required by the building permit is completed in order to obtain a certificate of occupancy and or to close out any building permit that was pulled from our office.
- Other: In addition to the inspections specified above, the Code Enforcement staff is authorized to make or require other inspections of any construction work to ascertain compliance with the provisions of our adopted codes and other laws that are enforced by this department.
- Special: In some cases, Code Enforcement may require a 3rd party inspector for special inspections. Primarily with commercial construction. Please ask if you are not already aware of required 3rd party special inspections.
