For Immediate Release September 4th, 2014

On June 3rd, 2014, the Junction City Commission approved City ordinance 302.055: Listening or Talking on Wireless Communication Devices While Driving; which essentially bans a driver from talking on their cell phones while driving unless it is done through a hands free device. The Junction City Police Department since that time has awaited the installation of signage around entrances to the City which notifies drivers of this new ordinance and to date have taken no enforcement action. The Police Department has been advised that all signage is in place and effective Monday September 15th, 2014 will begin issuing warning citations for a period of four weeks in hopes of educating the public of this new law. There is sufficient data available that distracted driving is one of the leading cause of accidents and with that in mind, the Police Department will vigorously enforce this ordinance once the four week warning phase is over on October 13th, 2014.  The ordinance itself is attached along with a photo of the signage that has been erected. The ordinance will be available also on the City of Junction City website at www.junctioncity-ks.gov.
